Season 52 of “Saturday Night Live” kicked off with its usual cold open, and it involved two unlikely political best friends.
Ramy Youssef stopped by to play New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, whose office was visited by James Austin Johnson’s Donald Trump.
“For some reason that no one can understand, I really, really love you,” Trump told Mamdani.
Summarizing their friendship, Trump also said, “I love spending time with you. We’re like one of those unlikely animal friendships, like when a tiger meets a kid. When I see stuff like that, I want to text it to you and say, ‘That could be us, but you’re playing.’ Is that timely? Do people still say that? Anyway…”
The two discussed the storm currently hitting the East Coast, the Knicks championship, this week’s UN meeting in New York, Trump’s recent reception with Chinese President Xi Jinping, as well as his state dinner with Sam Altman, Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg.
Soon, their discussion was interrupted by Natalie Harp, Trump’s much-discussed executive assistant. Played by Ashley Padilla, Harp brought up “Obsession” character Nikki.
Despite the storm, “I ran here from D.C., gun-style,” Harp said.
“She looks like the girl from Obsession, but blonde,” Trump joked.
Harp ended the skit by taking Mamdani aside and threatening him, saying, “If you hurt him, I’ll kill you.” »
Jalen Brunson hosts the season premiere with Katseye as musical guest. The episode also marks the debut of new cast members Saidah Belo-Osagie and Grace Reiter.
