‘SNL’ Weekend Update Mocks Trump’s Nobel Peace Prize Loss and Pete Hegseth’s Execution Plan
Saturday evening live‘s Weekend Update mocked Donald Trump for once again losing – and thinking he actually had a chance of winning – the Nobel Peace Prize, and took aim at Pete Hegseth’s controversial plans to livestream an execution by firing squad.
The Nobel committee awarded its prize Friday to Navanethem “Navi” Pillay, a South African human rights lawyer and judge who has investigated war crimes for the United Nations and the International Criminal Court.
“Unfortunately, we have to start tonight with a tragic and developing story involving President Trump. No, not that,” joked Colin Jost. “Unfortunately, President Trump didn’t win the Nobel Peace Prize… But don’t worry. I think he’s taking it all in stride.”
Jost then spoke about the president speaking at a rally in Syracuse, New York on Friday, during which he said “no one has ever heard of” the recipient.
“He’s really angry because he “He didn’t win the peace prize,” Jost stressed. “Trump kidnapped the president of Venezuela, and then he waged so much war that we ran out of missiles, and he was still thinking, ‘This is my year.’”
“It’s really like I thought I could win an Oscar for Tom and Jerry” Jost said of the 2021 live-action animated film.
Co-host Michael Che then explained how Pillay essentially mocked Trump’s desire to win the award. “If you clap a little more, maybe I’ll share this award with Trump,” she said.
This, Che said, “is a harmless little joke, which could incite Trump to bomb any country he thinks it comes from.”
Che then turned to Hegseth’s announcement that the December firing squad execution of the Fort Hood mass shooter would be broadcast live.
If these plans come to fruition, Che said, it would result in “the first public execution in the United States since… I mean, a few weeks ago?” As he said this, a photo of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents appeared on the screen.
Che then reacted to how ICE agents were considering using “shock” gloves — “which leave no marks and cause incredible pain, hopefully to an agent who forgets to take them off at the urinal.” »
Also on Weekend Update, James Austin Johnson portrayed a selfish Kevin O’Leary, the Shark tank investor backing a massive data center campus in northwest Utah. After strong resistance from the public and state lawmakers, the facility is still under construction, but scaled down.
“It’s very simple: All I want to do is buy 40,000 acres of God’s untouched splendor and replace it with a very noisy computer that steals your job,” he said. “Is it going to use up precious water? Absolutely. Is it going to provide a necessary service? Who can say. But on the other hand, it’s going to make me a ton of money, and I think that’s great.”
