Sony Brings AI Graphics Scaling to Standard PS5
Sony is launching new AI upscaling technology specifically for the classic PS5. The new technology, called Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), is a “new level of AI upscaling performance” that is the result of Sony’s Project Amethyst work with AMD, according to a blog post.
Sony says that PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), available on the PS5 Pro, “remains the benchmark”, and in Digital FoundryWhile we’re first to the tech, it looks like QSSR isn’t as fast as PSSR because the PS5 doesn’t have dedicated machine learning silicon. As a result, you should probably expect a resolution closer to an enhanced 1440p resolution on PS5 instead of the enhanced 4K resolution on PS5 Pro.
“On PS5 Pro, developers almost uniformly output at 4K and adjust the rendering resolution below,” said Daniel Craig, Sony’s senior graphics R&D engineer. Digital Foundry. “On PS5, teams need to be more flexible, adjusting not only rendering resolution, but also their intermediate and final presentation goals based on graphics mode. »
But Craig also said that QSSR is “basically a drop-in replacement for titles that already support PSSR” after just a few days of tuning, making it more likely that PS5 developers will take advantage of it. The technology will be “widely offered to all PlayStation developers,” Sony says.
Marvel’s Wolverine And Ghost of Yōtei will be the first games to take advantage of QSSR and are today receiving patches to offer the technology as “an additional graphics option on PS5”. (Complete Edition of The Ghost of Yōtei is also launching today.) Here are some videos from Sony showing what QSSR looks like in these games, and it seems to make the graphics a bit sharper:
Digital Foundry writes that “the potential here is remarkable: low resolution and poor scaling have impacted many titles this generation, but QSSR could make a big difference.” »
