Sony leaves CES in 2027 as it continues its transition into entertainment

Sony, one of the world’s most iconic consumer electronics companies, will not participate in the 2027 Consumer Electronics Show.
A report from Nikkei (via JapanTimes) reveals that the Japanese giant has pulled out of next year’s Las Vegas event, scheduled for January.
The company is still present at the convention since its first edition in 1967, which means that this will end 60 years of existence.
But that’s not a huge surprise: its presence in 2026 was based on its partnership with Honda on the Afeela EV car, which has since been discontinued.
While Sony continues to make consumer electronics like cameras and headphones, it sold its iconic Bravia TV division to Chinese manufacturer TCL earlier this year.
The company sees its future in entertainment and divides its attention between movies, music and, of course, gaming.
Its PlayStation brand is the leader in the console market, although it faces strong competition from Nintendo. Meanwhile, it is Spider-Man: A Whole New Day the film just broke records earlier this year.
Sony recently preferred to invest in emerging entertainment categories like anime ahead of consumer electronics, purchasing streaming platform Crunchyroll.
His decision to leave CES could have repercussions for the consumer electronics industry, but it’s not a huge surprise.
