SpaceX reportedly considering buying Boost Mobile or using its cellular network
The potential deal could serve as a shortcut to establishing SpaceX as a mobile operator.
SpaceX may have found a potential way around its entry into the wireless carrier business through Boost Mobile. As first reported The Washington PostElon Musk’s company has held talks in recent months with Boost Mobile parent company EchoStar that could see SpaceX launch “its own signature wireless service” over the existing network.
According to Washington PostAccording to SpaceX sources, the deal could look like SpaceX acquiring Boost Mobile outright or gaining access to its cellular network, leased from AT&T and T-Mobile. There could be a major problem with this deal, however, since SpaceX’s potential mobile service would need the green light from these major mobile carriers, according to the report. The Washington Post also reported that major cell phone companies, including AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon, had already denied Musk access to its cellular networks in order to launch a separate SpaceX service.
No deal has been confirmed yet, but the discussions between SpaceX and EchoStar should come as no surprise to anyone interested in the company’s recent dealings. Last year, SpaceX acquired $2.6 billion in spectrum licenses from EchoStar, which would be used to improve the 5G connections of its Starlink network. Most recently, Starlink confirmed its intention to become a “major mobile operator in the United States” and made another major acquisition in hopes of achieving this goal.
