
Spurrier once said not to applaud after a loss, Beamer praises defeat
It was September 29, 2006, when Steve Spurrierthen in his second year as head coach at South Carolinatold fans: “Please don’t applaud if we are beaten.” The Gamecocks took on second-ranked Auburn for a 24-17 final, but a touchdown pass that would have tied the game was dropped in the final minutes of the game, and three jump balls were thrown. Sidney Rice fell incomplete.
The players were applauded off the field Thursday night on ESPN as the nearly 75,000 people in attendance at Williams-Brice Stadium wanted to show their appreciation for the efforts to come together.
Current head coach of the Gamecocks Shane Beamer wasn’t on the Spurrier staff in 2006, joining the program the following season as an assistant, but he doesn’t take his cues from the head ball coach.
