Standard Time or Daylight Saving Time: Look up the zip code to see the change

Search for your zip code to see when your sunrise and sunset would occur if the United States got rid of the time change.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill in July that would make daylight saving time permanent. Since then, the Sun Protection Act has stalled in the Senate, meaning the clock “goes back” an hour on Halloween weekend.

The Sunshine Protection Act passed the House 308-117. Making daylight saving time permanent would mean using year-round the time zone that people now set their clocks to, from March to November.

President Donald Trump supported the creation of the permanent time zone, writing on Truth Social in May: “It’s time for people to stop worrying about ‘the clock,’ let alone all the work and money spent on this ridiculous biannual production.”

Daylight saving time occurs annually from March to November in the United States. On the second Sunday in March, the clocks go forward. When it ends, on the first Sunday in November, the clocks go back.

Use the tool below and search for your zip code to see how your sunrise and sunset would change if the bill to make daylight saving time becomes law.

Daylight saving time was first implemented in 1918 with the passage of the Standard Time Act to conserve energy, but was repealed the following year.

It was later implemented again during World War II, but was standardized in the United States with the passage of the Uniform Time Act in 1966, which established daylight saving time from April to October.

The law also allowed local exemptions. Neither Hawaii nor Arizona, except the Navajo Nation, recognizes daylight saving time. Both states use standard time year-round.

The United States experimented with year-round daylight saving time in the 1970s. This effort, signed into law by President Richard Nixon, was intended to help conserve gas.

At first it had the approval of most Americans, but that approval dropped during the second month of the trial. One of the main concerns was the safety of children leaving for school in the dark in the morning. The trial was canceled later that year by President Gerald Ford.

The length of DST has been extended twice since the law was passed in 1966, once from 1987 and a second time from 2007.
