Stock market today: Dow Jones and S&P 500 rise, Nasdaq falls as investors await SpaceX and Netflix profits
Small caps are booming and healthcare just hit a record high. Meanwhile, Big Tech is stagnating.
Stocks opened mixed, with chip stocks (^SOX) lower and oil c(CL=F) near a five-month high. The rally spread throughout the morning as oil fell and chipmakers recouped their losses.
Today, about three out of four stocks in the S&P 500 are higher, putting the index on track for its broadest day since June. The Russell 2000 (^RUT) also beats the S&P 500 by the widest margin since June.
Healthcare stands out.
Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) hits record high, led by Eli Lilly (LLY), the top gainer among the 10 largest U.S. stocks. UnitedHealth (UNH) and Merck (MRK) are also stepping up. With the price of oil falling midday, airlines and home builders are joining in.
At the top, it’s a shared decision.
Meta (META), Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL) and Apple (AAPL) are down, wiping tens of billions in market value and offsetting gains from Lilly and Tesla (TSLA). Nvidia (NVDA), Microsoft (MSFT) and Broadcom (AVGO) are almost flat.
