S&P 500 futures were lower early Thursday as traders expected more earnings reports and economic data after a losing session driven by higher-than-expected inflation data.

S&P 500 Futures Contracts lost 0.31%, while Nasdaq-100 Futures Contracts fell 0.83%. Dow Jones Industrial Average Futures added 0.12%, or 63 points.

The heavy on technology Nasdaq Composite lost 1.9% in regular trading, marking its worst day since July 23 – when it fell 2.2%. THE S&P500 fell 1.1%, its biggest one-day decline since July 29. Dow was the relative outperformer, down just 0.1%.

In Asia, South Korea’s Kospi fell more than 7.84%, dragged down by technology heavyweights SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics. Japan’s Nikkei 225 index fell 4.4%, while the Hang Seng index fell 1%. Mainland China’s CSI 300 index lost 1.41%. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 index was down 0.85%.

There are growing concerns that the Federal Reserve will tighten monetary policy more aggressively before the end of the year, after new data showed that consumer prices in September rose faster than expected on an annual basis.

“Inflation is going to gas,” said Jamie Cox, managing partner of Harris Financial Group. “The origin of the inflationary impulse is quite clear, but two wars must end before we get any relief. The Federal Reserve made the mistake of calling Covid-era inflation transitory, and now it appears it is about to make the same mistake, in reverse, with respect to the energy supply shock.”

Investors will receive more inflation data on Thursday, with the September reading on producer prices due at 8:30 a.m. ET. New figures for retail sales and weekly jobless claims are also expected to be released on that date.

Corporate earnings season also continues, with regional banks US Bancorp and PNC scheduled to report results. Charles Schwab is also expected to report results.
