Storm on Tennessee-South Carolina field sparks postgame altercations
Updated October 25, 2026, 9:22 p.m. ET
Shortly after Malik Orsan’s 48-yard field goal split the uprights as time expired, giving South Carolina a dramatic 27-24 victory over No. 11 Tennessee, Gamecocks fans clad in garnet and black flocked to the field to celebrate the victory.
From this jubilation, however, came altercations which were filmed and quickly broadcast on social networks.
In the most high-profile example of chippiness, Tennessee linebacker Jeremiah Telander appeared to punch a South Carolina player before being quickly pulled away by a security guard and a Volunteer staff member before things escalated.
Telander wasn’t the only Tennessee player to let his emotions get the best of him, either.
In another video that circulated on social media, Vols lineman Daevin Hobbs appeared to push a Gamecocks fan who appeared to be carrying a whiteboard used to diagram plays away from the Tennessee sideline. After pushing the fan, Hobbs grabbed the easel.
Other equipment and video equipment on the Vols sideline was damaged during the assault on the field.
Other videos showed South Carolina fans on the field taunting Tennessee players after the game. In one, a Gamecocks fan shouted profanities and waved his hands at Vols defensive lineman Kedric Golston, who turned his head and walked away.
A request for comment to Tennessee from the Knoxville News Sentinel, part of the USA TODAY Network, was not immediately returned.
Because South Carolina fans immediately stormed the field and did not give the opposing team a chance to clear the field, the Gamecocks face being fined $500,000 by the SEC. That money would go directly to Tennessee, which was fined for its run against Alabama last week.
The loss dropped the Vols to 6-2 on the season and came a week after a 26-10 victory over the Crimson Tide, who were then the No. 7 team in the country. South Carolina and struggling head coach Shane Beamer, meanwhile, improved to 4-3 and earned their second straight victory against a top-15 opponent, after beating then-No. 15 Florida on October 10.
