‘Strong indications’ Iran played role in UK bomb plot, says Andy Burnham
- Five British men were released on bail on Monday after being arrested a day earlier in connection with the alleged plot.
What they say: “We will say more in due course but we can confirm… that we believe Iran played a role,” Burnham told the BBC, declining to give further details.
- He stressed that the counterterrorism investigation is ongoing and “complex” and that investigators are “working closely with our colleagues” in the United States.
- Rubio told Fox News on Monday that the incident “tethers us to the reality here, which is that we are dealing with elements around the world – and in the case of Iran, for example, who have openly threatened to attack American interests around the world.”
Context: The UK earlier this year authorized the US Air Force to use RAF Fairford for limited defensive strikes against Iranian missile capabilities.
- Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps named RAF Fairford in July when it said any British base used for attacks on Iranian territory would be considered a “legitimate target.”
