‘Survivor 51’ Recap: Tribe Merger Madness Launches!
- The merger took place on Survivor 51and the result was a chaotic vote that jumped several times.
- Kristin made the important decision to prioritize an ally over secrecy.
- There was an old-fashioned fusion party…with an Open Era twist.
There’s a lot going on with the big merge episode of Survivor 51. Chaos back at camp! An old-fashioned fusion feast preceded by an equally old-school larvae-eating competition! A potentially life-saving immunity challenge victory! But first, a simple question…. Was Brady peeing right next to the tribe’s camp? Because it looks like Brady was peeing right next to the tribe’s camp.
I mean, the edit wasn’t 100% clear on this, but here we are listening to Jelly talk in a confessional interview about how “Brady brings a level of toxicity to this game that no one needs,” and the visual they cut to save Jelly’s comment appeared to be Brady peeing on a tree. (I hope it was just to pee). And again, I have no concrete confirmation on this – poor choice of words; it’s bad – but the act in question also seems to be pretty close to camp.
Is the homeboy just releasing it in front of an audience? Even if he isn’t, he certainly doesn’t appear to be in a designated restroom area. I judge this by the fact that there was a camera right there… which only serves to give me PTSD from the time I was following poor Paloma Soto-Castillo in Gabon with my camera and she had to tell me, “Ummmm, I’m going to the bathroom.” I kept driving. (JOKE!)
But the location of these supposed Brady golden showers is, I think, actually related to the whole question of how much Brady’s insular label may be responsible for his ouster. If he was indeed urinating around the tribal camp, that warrants immediate expulsion…and I realize now immediate ejection This sounds like a shit joke, but I promise on behalf of Darnell “Brown Trout” Hamilton that it’s not.
It’s one thing to be loud and brash, and call everyone Brody, and occasionally cut off random body parts, but if you pee anywhere near the shelter or where people congregate, it’s a major problem. Survivor mistake.

Either way, Brady’s antics certainly weren’t for everyone. Jelly, Maggie and Mike were just a few of the people annoyed by the professional wrestler, and in a game where the ultimate goal is simply to blend in, Brady’s agitation became a major liability, something he himself admitted in his final words: “I played hard and I played with passion,” he told us. “Maybe sometimes Also a lot of passion.
Judging by Maggie’s scolding of Brady for telling Mike about the plan that ultimately landed Kristin, he went rogue on that one. Patt also told me during our exit interview that Brady continued to openly advertise the “Vibe Five” alliance to people who weren’t even part of it, which could easily have contributed to his ouster.
“Brady couldn’t keep his mouth shut about what he called the Vibe Five – a name I didn’t know about until after the game was over,” Patt said in our interview. “He was talking to people outside of our alliance about the five-person alliance on an 11-person tribe. Once we had an 11th person, it was even more imperative that no one could find out. But no, they knew. Their talk about the five literally came from my own ally, which I have to take credit for. Like, I chose him as an ally, so here we are. It was crazy to hear that later.”
Such, It is not great. It seems whether Brady was peeing or not, and whether it was right next to camp or he swam over to Exile Island to do his business, this dude wasn’t exactly Stealth R Us out there. And that’s what ultimately got him kicked out of the game.
Okay, we’re going to cover everything that happened in episode 7 of Survivor 51but if you’re looking for some pre-merge information and information, be sure to also check out my mid-game interview with Jelly. There are lots of good things in there. And with that, let’s act like a reality TV candidate in front of a plate of larvae and enjoy.

A dirty situation
Before we get to the merge, did you catch Jelly telling us about all the tricks she and Devin had up their sleeves with the immunity idol, the extra vote, and a fake idol? I found this offhand fake idol comment very interesting. Many false idols are built on Survivor who never make the cut because they never go anywhere. The fact that this one was even mentioned makes me wonder if this will come into play in some way down the road. Food for thought. Speaking of food, let’s get to fusion!
Hint for the future Survivor players: Every time Jeff Probst gathers all the people and starts recapping what has happened so far in the game, it means that a swap or merge of tribes is happening, and indeed, the Hostmaster General has soon ordered the competitors to give up their buffs.
There would no longer be New Era winning the merge, but players should win the merge feastbecause everyone would receive a plate of two larvae, and only the first 10 of 13 candidates to finish would then be able to partake of the food that people actually ate research eat.
The race that followed featured some truly A+++ camera work. Whether it was Jelly literally spilling larva guts onto the camera lens, Kilby crushing the larvae to kill them before chewing them, Sharonda spinning around like she was playing some sort of sadomasochistic version of Pin the Tail on the Donkey, or Maggie allowing the organs and digestive tract to slowly spill out of her mouth, there were enough hilarious shots for everyone.
Eventually, Kristin released her larvae, Cristian quit halfway, Sharonda lost last place to Kilby, and Lewis looked like he regretted every second of the whole affair. Franky, I thought Lewis would have been better at this given his lifetime experience with terrible Irish food. (No one let my wife, the very Irish Christina Kelly, read this.)

Kristin tells the truth
Wait a second… What happened to the Survivor’s Sanctuary?!?!? Isn’t that where good things happen? And isn’t that where big is? Survivor Are there parties taking place? Yet I didn’t hear a single word from Jeff Probst about the Sanctuary during his explanation of the holiday. Is Survivor Sanctuary officially unbranded? Have the naming rights expired and, if so, shouldn’t we now call it Applebees-Billie-Eilish Bourbon-Street-Chicken-Boomerang-Zac-Brown-Chill-Zone?
Ladies and gentlemen, I think the Open Era has officially killed Survivor Sanctuary. NO GOOD THING WILL EVER HAPPEN AGAIN!!! Especially when Brady is burping and trying to shove everything imaginable into his mouth.
Meanwhile, back at a camp without a party, Kristin did something interesting. Instead of remaining silent about the fact that her attached idol was actually becoming a full-fledged idol if Sharonda was out of the game, Kristin went and told Sharonda everything, saying that she would rather have a strong ally in the game than an idol for herself. But Kristin didn’t just tell Sharonda about the idol’s true powers. She also gave Sharonda the idol to hold.
Okay, we need to approach this decision like Brady approached that beer at the merger party. It is Above all a no-lose proposition in that Kristin just solidified an ally she broke up with during the tribe swap and still controls the idol and if it’s ever played. Remember: Sharonda can’t play the idol. All she can do is give it back to Kristin and hope she plays it on herself.
So let’s say Kristin changes her mind for some reason and wants to turn on Sharonda. All she has to do is not play Sharonda’s idol when she is returned to him. The only scenario in which she would lose the idol would be if they were. both blindsided by a vote that sent Sharonda to the jury (in which case Kristin might as well have been the one going home with an idol in her pocket if she’d kept it). Yes, there is some risk here, but very little, and the reward of gaining a rock-solid ally outweighs that risk. Great decision, Kristin!
The other big pre-challenge activity over the name of the newly merged Tovutu tribe was all the discussion around Mike. Brady continued to criticize and dismiss his former alliance partner, telling Kilby he was ready to get rid of him “yesterday.” Kilby was also disillusioned: “Talking to Mike is like talking to a wall. He doesn’t give you anything. It’s a complete waste of time.”
Knowing he was on the outs with some of the original Toka, Mike began working the island with the fervor of a New York Yankees employee using a knife and fork to eat a Snickers bar. He warned Jelly that if he went, she would be next. He told Cristian he was “open for business” without specifying exactly what that was. He grew closer to Eric, who returned the favor by daydreaming about stripper movies and commenting, “Let’s make some magic, Mike!”
But the real magic will have to wait until after the challenge.

Radiating positively
The first post-merge challenge of the Open Era felt much like a challenge from any other era as players had to balance on a narrow beam while balancing a statue on the end of a long pole. Meh. It was good. Not my favorite. Not terribly bad.
What contributed to the suspense, of course, was that the one person who clearly needed immunity made a deep run, as Mike managed to ignore Jeff Probst by reminding them how difficult their situation was (“Your toes are going asleep, your arms are going numb, this stick is getting heavier”) and went all the way to a showdown against Lewis, who…
