Swiss glaciers are losing an astonishing amount of ice. See the collapse.
Switzerland’s iconic glaciers lost a huge amount of ice in 2026, according to a new report, signaling rapid and continued melting driven by climate change that has stunned even scientists who study it.
About 20 percent of glacial ice in Switzerland has disappeared since 2021, according to Glacier Monitoring in Switzerland, or GLAMOS, a university-run service that makes the measurements. This year, for some glaciers, losses were unprecedented and eclipsed 2022, the worst melting year on record.
