Sydney Sweeney’s 131-minute thriller is officially HBO Max’s biggest streaming hit
Aside from the unlikely success that was “Anyone But You,” Sydney Sweeney hasn’t had the easiest time at the box office. But 2025’s “The Housemaid” was an undeniable success and quickly became known as one of Sweeney’s best films. Today, the sexy psychological thriller is enjoying renewed success on HBO Max, where it’s currently topping the movie charts.
With “The Housemaid,” director Paul Feig and writer Rebecca Sonnenshine have delivered a stellar adaptation of Freida McFadden’s 2022 novel of the same name. Sweeney plays a formerly incarcerated young woman named Millie Calloway, who takes a job as a maid for Amand Seyfried’s Nina Winchester and her family. Suffice it to say, some absolutely crazy things happen as Millie becomes more familiar with the Winchesters and finds herself attracted to Nina’s husband, Andrew (Brandon Sklenar).
The film was released theatrically in December 2025, earning positive reviews and earning $400.5 million against a budget of $35 million. It’s a success by any measure, ensuring that Lionsgate quickly greenlit a sequel. While audiences wait for the next installment in Sweeney’s steamy saga, the original film is enjoying a resurgence on HBO Max, where it is currently dominating the streamer’s movie rankings just days after being released.
The Housemaid is number one on HBO Max days after its debut
“The Housemaid” debuted streaming on Starz in April 2026 before moving to HBO Max on October 9, 2026. It didn’t take long for HBO Max subscribers to pounce on the film like a wronged maid exacting revenge on her tormentor.
According to streaming audience tracker FlixPatrol, “The Housemaid” reached the top spot on the HBO Max movie chart in the United States on October 11, 2026 and remained at the top spot on October 12. It even managed to topple Kane Parsons’ “Backrooms,” which has enjoyed a long-standing spot at the top of this very chart for some time now. Additionally, “The Housemaid” has overtaken “Evil Dead Burn,” which has also dominated the movie charts since its October 2, 2026 debut on the streamer.
Whether “The Housemaid” will have a similarly long run remains to be seen, but it’s a good start to the film’s second streaming release following its tenure at Starz. Unfortunately, fans will have to wait until December 2027 for the next film in the series, but hopefully enthusiasm for the saga remains high until then.
The “Housemaid” sequel also faces a major problem in that Amanda Seyfried was the best thing in the first film and has yet to be confirmed to return for the follow-up. Indeed, the book the sequel is based on, “The Housemaid’s Secret,” sees Millie Calloway working for a new family and doesn’t star Nina Winchester, so we’ll see if Paul Feig and Lionsgate find a way to bring Seyfried into the mix. For now, however, the studio can take heart that the first film is proving popular on HBO Max, which, alongside its box office success, bodes well for the franchise.
