Taika Waititi really isn’t crazy about ‘Klara and the Sun,’ y’all
A week after the release, the public doesn’t really feel Klara and the sun.
The film, which stars Jenna Ortega, Amy Adams and Mia Tharia, was released alongside Wildwood And clay face. Spectators came out to see these two, and the surprise success You can see everything, exit Clara in the earth. It has currently only grossed $1.7 million at the box office and has received fairly negative reviews. As such, Sony has scaled back the theatrical rollout and Spanish media outlet Hobby Consolas has now announced that the Spanish release has been canceled entirely.
On its own, it probably wouldn’t be that bad; films with A-list actors sometimes fail. However, Klara and the sun is directed by Taika Waititi, and it looks like the biggest bomb of his career. His reaction to the critical participation was not great. On Instagram, he boasted that he hadn’t read reviews of “anything aimed at me or my peers in almost 15 years. But I listen to people,” with a photo of a Screenrant article highlighting At Klara’s higher audience score. (Although it was 78% at the time of writing on Screenrant, it stands at 74% at the time of writing.)
Unfortunately, he couldn’t leave it at that: in the spirit of Halloween, Waititi suggested that we all spare “a thought for those sad lost souls who couldn’t realize their dream of becoming artists and therefore became critics.” Jojo Rabbit. Not relevant. Disconnected. Obsolete. In the trash.
How disappointing and childish coming from a director who is no stranger to mixed responses to his work. (See The next goal wins And Thor: Love and Thunder.) Regardless of the critics’ feelings Jojo, which was apparently generally positive – positive enough that it won 42 awards, including an Oscar for its screenplay – holding a grudge for almost a decade against your last film is about as cool as it sounds. Just take the victory you have with Clara and maybe read a review or two of your films, not like it would hurt.
