Tampa Citibank shooting leaves victim injured, gunman shot dead in cafeteria
At least one person was killed in a shooting at the Citibank campus outside Tampa, Florida, shortly after noon Wednesday — and the shooter is also dead, authorities say.
The victim was reported injured and bleeding in the Citibank Center cafeteria, according to Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) scanner traffic.
A gray vehicle reportedly crashed into the building moments before the shooting, before a shooter was seen carrying a shotgun and a handgun, according to scanner traffic.
The suspect died after what appears to be a “targeted incident,” Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said.
Sources said the shooting is believed to have involved a salesman on site, not Citibank employees.
In footage seen by WFLA, the suspect appears to be a tall man, bald or with a shaved head, and was seen wearing a black jacket, baggy pants that fell down, and boots.
The entire building was evacuated piece by piece by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Department SWAT team.
Aerial footage shows law enforcement moving through the company’s massive grounds Wednesday afternoon, WFLA reported.
Citibank Center employees were invited to gather at a “reunification site” in a nearby parking lot following the shooting. A total of 367 HCSO deputies responded to the scene, working alongside specialized units to secure the area, clear the scene and ensure the safety of everyone involved.
Citi employs more than 10,000 people in the Tampa area, which includes the 670,000-square-foot corporate park where the shooting took place.
The New York-based bank has established a strong presence in the office, with global banking, technology, legal, compliance, risk management, human resources and other departments operating in Tampa.
A Citi spokesperson told the Post that the company was “aware of an incident impacting our Tampa, Florida, location and was coordinating with law enforcement.”
Students and employees at nearby Hillsborough College have been warned to shelter in place amid heavy police activity.
“Please avoid the area of Queens Palm Drive and Falkenburg Road until further notice. We appreciate your patience and cooperation as crews work the area,” HCSO said in a statement.
