NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – Security shot and killed a suspect Thursday morning at a federal courthouse in downtown Nashville, authorities say.
Police and first responders swarmed the Fred D. Thompson Federal Building and Courthouse, 719 Church St., around 9:30 a.m.
Authorities say the suspect, described as a man in his 40s, pulled out a gun and attempted to fire it, but the gun did not go off. He then pulled out a knife, and that’s when security forces fired their firearms, officials said at a news conference.
7:32 p.m. – The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has released the name of the man who was fatally shot by a security guard after pulling out a gun and knife at the Fred D Thompson Federal Building and Courthouse on Thursday.
The suspect was identified as 42-year-old Jack Henson II.
6:13 p.m. – The US Marshals Service sent out a statement saying that during the incident, the armed suspect charged the security guard, who is a USMS contracted security guard.
“The armed individual charged one of the United States Marshals Service contracted security officers. The CSO gave the command to stop but the attacker did not do so,” the USMS said. “When the assailant refused to stop, the CSO fired his service weapon, striking the assailant. Marshals Service personnel rendered assistance to the assailant until EMS arrived at the building.”
1:45 p.m. – The suspect’s vehicle was towed away from downtown Nashville.
11:21 a.m. – After initially sharing their reopening plans, library officials said they will now keep the main library closed for the remainder of the day Thursday.

11:15 a.m. – Library officials say the downtown Nashville Main Library will reopen at 11:30 a.m. She was evacuated after the shooting.
10:49 a.m. – The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation will take the lead in investigating the shooting, officials said at a news conference.
10:46 a.m. – Police say the suspect “has ties to Nashville,” but they have not specified the exact connection.
10:43 a.m. – The suspect did not pass through security at the courthouse, a spokesperson said. The checkpoint is a critical measure to protect U.S. senators and others entering the building.
10:42 a.m. – The suspect in the courthouse shooting was from out of state, according to MNPD. Officers and police K-9s searched the car and found nothing threatening, police said.
10:40 a.m. – Police said a courthouse security guard shot the suspect after he entered the building armed with a pistol. The suspect allegedly attempted to discharge his weapon, but it did not fire, according to MNPD.
“This is the first time something like this has happened in this courthouse,” the police spokesperson said.
10:37 a.m. – The suspect in the courthouse shooting died after being transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, a Metro Nashville police spokesperson said at a news conference.
10:34 a.m. – WSMV4 has contacted the FBI, U.S. Marshals and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for information about the shooting.
10:30 a.m. – Investigators are speaking with courthouse security officers to better understand the events leading up to the shooting.
It is still unclear if anyone was injured, but first responders responded to the scene.
10:20 a.m. – WSMV crews share photos taken outside the courthouse. Police installed a videotape at the crime scene and cordoned off the area.
10:14 a.m. – The Metro Nashville Police Department said because the shooting took place on federal property, federal authorities would be responsible for investigating.
10:10 a.m. – The main downtown branch of the Nashville Public Library is being evacuated following a reported shooting at a nearby federal courthouse.
