At least ten people were killed in a collision between two trains in the Spanish province of Toledo, we learned on Wednesday.

The high-speed trains collided shortly before 9:15 a.m. local time (4:15 a.m. ET), when emergency services were deployed to the scene.

Esther Padilla, a spokeswoman for the regional government of Castile-La Mancha, told Spanish television channels that the incident left at least 10 people dead.

Authorities said they would open the Urda town sports hall to help those affected, and an advanced medical post would be set up at the crash site to triage the injured, provide medical care and transfer those who need further care to hospitals. It is not yet known how many people were injured.

Rail infrastructure manager Adif is investigating the sequence of events surrounding the accident, Spanish news agency EFE reported on Wednesday.

Adif said in a post on X on Wednesday morning that traffic on the Madrid-Andalusia high-speed line was interrupted due to a collision between two trains.

El Pais newspaper reported that authorities fear the number of confirmed deaths could rise, with sources saying Wednesday’s collision could have worse consequences than a high-speed crash in southern Spain that killed 45 people earlier this year.

“We don’t have a figure, but it’s going to be a major tragedy,” Spanish Health Minister Mónica García told the television news channel, according to El Pais.

Authorities do not currently know what caused Wednesday’s collision. The trains involved were operated by AVE and Iryo, according to local media, and at least two carriages fell down an embankment after the accident. More than 500 passengers were on board the two trains, El Pais said.
