A Tennessee woman scheduled to be executed Wednesday for a brutal murder she helped carry out when she was 18 would become the first woman put to death by the state in more than 200 years.
While several courts have upheld Christa Pike’s death sentence, her looming execution date has prompted advocates for women and criminal justice reform to appeal to Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee (R) to spare her life. They argue that Pike’s age at the time of the crime and the extensive physical and sexual abuse she suffered as a child and teenager should be a factor in the severity of her punishment.
