The 20-17 victory over the then number 1. 14 Tennessee Volunteers in Knoxville on Saturday was enough for the Texas Longhorns to maintain the top spot in both of Sunday’s major polls.
This is now the third straight week the Longhorns have been No. 1 in both the Coaches’ Poll and the AP Poll as head coach Steve Sarkisian’s team heads into the team’s only bye week of the season before heading to Dallas to face the Sooners in the Cotton Bowl.
The heartbreaking finale for Texas at Neyland Stadium cost the Horns a first-place vote in the coaches’ poll, but the writers were more lenient with four first-place votes earned against the No. 2 Bulldogs.
Tennessee fell four spots to No. 17 in the coaches poll and three spots to No. 17 in the AP poll this week after the Vols suffered their first loss of the season.
Notably rising in the SEC is Florida, which jumped 14 spots in the Coaches’ Poll and 13 spots in the AP Poll to No. 8 nationally following Saturday’s convincing 52-28 victory over Ole Miss, formerly a top 10 team in both polls.
Meanwhile, the Aggies dropped out of both polls after suffering back-to-back losses with Saturday’s latest 36-6 loss to LSU sending the Texas A&M program into a veritable tailspin.
