Voter Registrations in Texas reached a record high of more than 19 million ahead of the crucial midterm elections on November 3.

Registrations are up 2.2% from the last major general election in November 2024 and 2% from the March primary elections, according to a statement released Friday by the Texas Secretary of State. The latest figures are also 7.7% higher than the last midterm elections in November 2022.

Fast-growing suburban counties have seen some of the strongest growth since the last midterms, including Kaufman (27% more registered voters), Waller (23%), Ellis (21%), and Hays (21%).

Notably, Tarrant, which political observers consider a swing county, was the largest county to see a decline in registered voters. The county had 32,503 fewer voters than four years ago, a decrease of 2.6 percent. Tarrant grew 4.1% between 2022 and 2025, according to vintage population estimates.

“Texas continues to experience strong voter registration and we want all eligible Texans to be prepared to participate in the upcoming election,” Secretary of State Howden Robert Howden said in the press release.

Early voting begins Monday.

The jump comes amid a series of state and local actions that have threatened voter registrations across the state. Over the past month, officials have worked to resolve 500,000 voter applications that remained unprocessed because of a software error in the Texas Department of Public Safety web portal. The agency failed to send hundreds of thousands of applications to counties, leaving local officials to play catch-up just weeks before early voting began. That backlog has since been resolved, Texas officials said Wednesday.

On Thursday, county officials learned that a separate state error had caused a backlog of several thousand additional voter registration records. The issue affects address updates made through Texas.gov between September 1 and last week; election officials in four counties — Bexar, Travis, Williamson and Hays — have received additional filings to process, according to the Texas Association of County Election Officials.

While local authorities continue to process applications, registrations postmarked or submitted to DPS before October 5 will be considered valid, and these voters will still be able to vote provisionally.

Earlier this year, the state also came under fire for its efforts to purge its voter rolls of non-citizens. Texas was one of the first states to turn over its voter rolls to the federal government in January at the request of the U.S. Department of Justice, which said the request was part of its effort to enforce state voter rolls.

A Department of Homeland Security tool used to check voter eligibility then erroneously flagged a number of eligible voters as potential noncitizens in Texas counties. President Donald Trump has long claimed, without evidence, that millions of noncitizens vote in U.S. elections, a claim that federal review of voter rolls has not supported.

This record voter registration also comes after increased turnout in the March primary elections. Nearly a quarter of registered voters cast ballots, a sign of increased interest in this year’s high-stakes midterm elections.
