‘The Batman 2’ halts production as Matt Reeves steps away
Warner Bros. and DC Studios have halted production on “The Batman Part II,” as director Matt Reeves takes a break to attend to personal matters.
“Production on ‘The Batman Part II’ has been temporarily suspended while Matt Reeves focuses on a family matter,” a spokesperson said in a statement. “Matt has the full support of DC Studios and we look forward to continuing the journey soon.”
Robert Pattinson returns as the Caped Crusader in the highly anticipated superhero sequel, which has already faced several delays. “The Batman Part II” was originally scheduled for release on October 2, 2026, before Warner Bros. did not delay it to October 1, 2027. Then, in July, the studio pushed the film back to February 2028. Reeves’ first “Batman” was released in March 2022.
Alongside Pattinson, other cast members include Scarlett Johansson, Colin Farrell, Sebastian Stan, Andy Serkis and Jeffrey Wright.
After the initial delay, DC Studios boss James Gunn spoke to Threads to justify the decision, writing that it’s “pretty common” for big blockbusters to have years apart between sequels.
“To be fair, a gap of 5 years or more is pretty common in sequels,” Gunn wrote on Threads at the time. “7 years between “Alien” and “Aliens”. 14 years between the “Incredibles”. 7 years between the first two “Terminators”. 13 years between “Avatars”. 36 years between “Top Guns”. And of course, six years between “Guardians Vol 2” and “Vol 3”.
In a recent interview with Collider, Pattinson said that “The Batman Part II” was a “completely different take” on the first film.
“It’s so ambitious. I mean, I kind of said the other day about something that the first one was a different version of a Batman movie, and this one is another one,” he told Collider in a recent interview. “It’s a real left turn from the first one, but somehow it retains elements of that kind of feel. But it definitely feels really ambitious, and I can’t wait to see how it turns out.”
