The Beach Boys were supposed to return to the stage in October. 9 at Grossinger Motors Arena in Bloomington, Illinois, after gradually canceling all of their dates over the past three months as Mike Love takes time to “recharge” following an unspecified health issue. But they also just pulled that show. A Facebook post from Grossinger Motors Arena says the show was “canceled due to unforeseen circumstances,” reflecting the exact language of venues that canceled shows in September.
The group performed one final public concert on July 18 in Valdosta, Georgia, after an uneven few months in which Love appeared thin and sang in a hoarse, diminished voice. “The loss of my sister, Maureen, on the one-year anniversary of my cousin Brian’s death, combined with my continued recovery from what started as bronchitis, followed by COVID, has taken a toll on me both emotionally and physically,” Love wrote to fans in June during a European tour marked by hectic performances. “I feel physically stronger every day, but I am emotionally heartbroken.”
A month later, the band postponed all their concerts until the end of September so that Love would have more time to rest. But when September arrived, all four planned concerts were canceled without explanation.
Love and the rest of the touring band, including frequent guest John Stamos, reunited on October 3 for a private concert at the luxury Waldorf Astoria Monarch Beach hotel in Dana Point, California. Few details about this show have been released, but a photo uploaded to the band’s fan forum shows Love sitting in a chair on stage.
A representative for the group did not immediately respond to a request for comment. As of now, the band’s upcoming shows – October 9 in Cincinnati, October 11 in Nashville and October 10 in Calgary, Alberta – are still planned.
Al Jardine, the only other living member of the original Beach Boys lineup, continues to tour with veteran members of Brian Wilson’s backing band, which he dubbed the Pet Sounds Band. Their next show is October 10 at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts in Poway, California.
