Disney+ has a new show to watch that has a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score from critics and is bound to hold the attention of teen audiences.
Disney+
While most people split their Disney+ time between animated films and Blue for kids, and Star Wars and Marvel for adults (well, mostly), there are plenty of shows that fall in between. One of them is currently streaming and has a 100% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Coven Academy is now on Disney+ as of October 2, a series about witches, you might guess, that critics are very fond of in early reviews, given its 100% Rotten Tomatoes score. Here is the summary:
“In the haunted heart of New Orleans, three teenage witches and their wizard peers attend an elite magic boarding school where power is currency, secrets are deadly, and attraction is a liability.”
If Coven Academy This sounds like a YA novel adaptation to you, you’d be… wrong, actually. It is a series created by Tim Federle, who also directed High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, which aired for four seasons and led to the massive success of now pop megastar Olivia Rodrigo.
Star Malina Pauli Weissman previously starred in A series of unfortunate events on Netflix, and played young Kara Zor-El on the CW Supergirl. Other stars like Malachi Burton have Disney pedigrees, as he appeared in Camp Rock 3, Zombies 4, Undercover 1 And 2, all on Disney. Others, like Jordan Leftwich (appropriate name), are new faces. The only name I recognize in the cast is Tiffani Thiessen, who my generation of course knows as Kelly Kapowski from Saved by the bell. In the mid-2000s, she starred in 81 episodes of White collar.
Coven Academy features 21 extremely short episodes, ranging from just 11 to 23 minutes each. Is this some sort of Gen Z attention-grabbing plan? It seems so. When the show first aired on Freeform a day before its Disney+ debut, it had 10 episodes lasting 25 to 43 minutes, but when it went to Disney, those were split in half. I wonder if we’ll start to see this with more and more shows aimed at tweens and teens. Of course, shows aimed at young people already include very short episodes, Blue has Paw Patrol.
Witch Schools Series Arrives Almost Three Months Before HBO Max Blockbuster Harry Potter series, arriving at Christmas 2026 and covering the first book. This show will be on the air for 10 years, and no matter how many other supernatural school series there are, there will be little to rival it. The biggest competitor is Netflix Wednesdaywhere Nevermore is a school for freaks and misfits, but even there the viewership has declined significantly between seasons.
It’s Disney, and Coven Academy doesn’t need to put up huge numbers to come back for more seasons, and we’ll see how that goes when the numbers change.
