“The Diplomat” has been renewed for season 5 on Netflix, the streamer announced Thursday. The news comes shortly after season 4 released on the platform earlier this month.
While no information has been released on plot details for the upcoming season (fans can expect more information from Netflix in the future), there’s been no shortage of drama between the political thriller’s two married couples: Ambassador Kate (Keri Russell) and Vice President Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell), and, during a “West Wing” meeting, President Grace (Allison Janney) and Todd Penn (Bradley Whitford).
Season 4, which ended on a huge cliffhanger, followed the show’s two marriages as they threatened to “eat each other alive,” according to its official description. “A catastrophic moment shatters the fragile peace Kate Wyler brokered between the United States and the United Kingdom, as well as the crumbling marriage she is trying to save. As she fights to stem the bleeding, President Grace Penn and Vice President Hal Wyler’s conspiracy to steal Russia’s most powerful weapon sends the United States toward war. Kate and Todd (Bradley Whitford), a troubled couple at best, band together to prevent the alliance Grace-Hal to upset the balance of power abroad and at home.”
Ato Essandoh, Ali Ahn and Nana Mensah also star.
“The Diplomat” was an immediate hit for Netflix when it debuted in 2023. Season 1 generated 173.46 million hours watched in its first four weeks, according to Netflix, while season 2 spent four weeks in the top 10 worldwide. Season 4 reached number three on the Worldwide Top 10 in its second week and entered the Top 10 in 63 countries. Previously, the series got a renewal for season 4 even before season 3 premiered.
The series and Russell have earned numerous nominations, including Emmys and Golden Globes. For season 3, Russell won the SAG Actor’s Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series, Janney won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, and the series received seven Emmy nominations in total, including for Outstanding Drama.
Debora Cahn created “The Diplomat” and serves as executive producer alongside Russell, Janice Williams, Alex Graves, Peter Noah and Eli Attie. All seasons of the series are available on Netflix.
