The Diplomat Season 4: Keri Russell’s Kate Wyler is the performance of the week
THE INTERPRETER | Keri Russell
THE TO SHOW | “The diplomat”
THE EPISODE | “Pagliacci” (October 15, 2026)
PERFORMANCE | As Kate Wyler, the titular diplomat in Netflix’s gripping political thriller, Keri Russell always has plenty of twists and turns under her belt each season, and she always infuses Kate with a cool skill, even when she’s juggling multiple international bombshells. There are times, however, when this cool facade of Kate’s breaks a little, and that happened in Episode 4 of this season, as a combination of political upheaval and personal tragedy pushed Kate to the brink – and it led to some of Russell’s best work on the show.
As the episode opened, Kate learned that her British counterpart (and occasional flirting partner) Austin Dennison had been killed in a helicopter crash. But she rushed to deal with the next crisis, seemingly willing to show no discernible reaction. (Not yet, anyway.) Hal could tell something was wrong, and when he later asked for simple eye contact, Kate reluctantly complied… and then Russell’s face began to crumble under the tidal wave of emotion she’d been suppressing.
But they had a crisis to deal with – of course – and when Hal advised Kate to threaten British Prime Minister Trowbridge with blackmail if he didn’t do what they wanted, Russell visibly bristled, with Kate sternly accusing him of being a “mobster” and warning him not to hug her: “I don’t recommend that.” It was only when Stuart stopped by that Kate allowed herself to fully feel the grief caused by Dennison’s death, sharing a poignant toast in his honor. (She even advised Stuart to ask Eidra the question, reminding us that badass Kate also has a romantic side.)
So Kate was already emotionally exhausted when she sat down with Trowbridge for a crucial meeting, and when Trowbridge turned frosty and told her she wasn’t welcome at Dennison’s funeral, we saw a glint of anger ignite in Kate’s eyes. His diplomatic veneer crumbled as he descended on Trowbridge, making his threat of blackmail clear before storming off. It was an unusually impulsive move on Kate’s part, and perhaps the least diplomatic we’ve ever seen. But it also made perfect sense… because Russell took great care to show us every gradual change in Kate’s complex psyche along the way. — Dave Nemetz
