We don’t have casting or production information yet, but between now and Seven, we have a release date. THE Game of Thrones film about the first Targaryen to rule Westeros, Aegon’s Conquestwas locked on June 1, 2029.
Owen Harris, who directed episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms And Black mirroris on board to steer. The screenplay is by Beau Willimon, who was nominated for an Oscar for co-writing the 2011 film. The Ides of March and also wrote six episodes of the famous series Star Wars series Andor.
News of the release date has been widely reported, with Deadline among the media outlets to confirm it. “The film would center on, you guessed it, Aegon I, the first lord of the Seven Kingdoms who fathered the Targaryen dynasty, the royal family at the heart of the entire franchise,” the trade writes. “This is the first time Aegon I has been depicted on screen.”
Aegon I predates the events of Dragon House by several generations, but its influence has become more and more pressing in the third season of the HBO series which has just concluded. As fans will recall, Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen’s bid for the Iron Throne is largely driven by her belief that Aegon’s vision for the future of Westeros – the Song of Ice and Fire – makes his reign predestined by the gods.
Whether or not we can see Aegon’s prophetic powers at work in Aegon’s Conquest remains to be seen of course; it’s also unclear how closely the film will tie into the canon of HBO shows or whether author George RR Martin will help shape the story.
