The Washington Commanders didn’t lose on Sunday, but what they did was the kind of thing that helps get a head coach fired. This is the kind of thing that turns the fan base against one love, but not the beloved quarterback.

What the Commanders did was more offensive to fans than the franchise could convince most people that their old Redskins nickname ever was.

The Commanders tied the New York Giants. They traded a likely win for the NFL’s stupidest move from Week 5, and that’s saying a lot because there were a fair number of candidates in the rankings for stupid moves.

After the game ended, coach Dan Quinn told reporters, “I’m gutted for our team.”

It’s like the guy holding the filleting knife is saying he feels empty because of the fish.

So what happened?

After blowing a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter, the Commanders found themselves in overtime at the Giants’ 26-yard line with 55 seconds left. All they had to do at that point was score a basket and figure out how to celebrate.

But instead they ran the football. And then lined up with 22 seconds left to seemingly throw a pass on another play.

Except they had no timeouts left and quarterback Jayden Daniels clearly didn’t know it.

THE DUMEST NFL MOMENT OF WEEK 4 NOW HAS A REFEREE ON MOUNT RUSHMORE TO ANGERLY JUMP TO CONCLUSIONS

So the Commanders gained two yards on a run by Daniels, when he should have instead thrown the ball to Jupiter to stop the clock.

Daniels also could have stood up and thrown the ball because there were seven seconds left when he was tackled. But he remained on the ground looking around for a moment, as if waiting for further orders from headquarters.

The Commanders were unable to line up and throw the ball before time expired. They never attempted the basket they should have attempted 55 seconds earlier.

Tie game.

“Leaving tonight with a tie feels like a loss,” Quinn said. “And the last sequence, we throw it out of bounds, we clock it, you give yourself a chance to kick it. And we’re proud of those moments at the end of the game.

“And after the first down, I always try to win more for the kick. Honestly, the right decision is to say we can go early and not put ourselves in that spot and that’s my responsibility. No one else. I’m gutted for our team.”

Quinn looked distraught immediately after the game as he simply stood at the 25-yard line. Alone. I don’t look at anything in particular. Don’t do anything in particular.

Just… numb.

It’s unclear whether Washington’s coaches themselves were aware of their timeout situation. If they knew, it’s unclear if they communicated the situation to Daniels.

Regardless, Daniels seemed completely oblivious to the timeout situation, as he lay on the ground with the clock ticking away and a chance at victory running out.

“Yeah, like sequencing isn’t his responsibility,” Quinn said.

It probably happened to him when he was just on the ground, waiting for someone to tell him to get up. Taking the blame off Daniels shows the coach doesn’t trust his quarterback to literally know what time it is.

Does anyone think Joe Montana, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady or any high school quarterback with even the slightest conscience would be this oblivious?

“We just have to be better,” Daniels said afterward. “We all have to be better. Situational football. It starts with me. Everyone will say the same thing, but we have to be better at situational football.”

Daniels was aware in the preseason of what LSU was doing with the No. 5 jersey this year, but he didn’t know what to do in the final 55 seconds of that game.

“We have to stop the clock,” Daniels said. “We need to know the situation. We need to treat this as an offense. It starts with everyone, top to bottom. Ultimately, it’s my fault.”

It’s on Quinn, whose team is 1-3-1 instead of 2-3. That’s on the offensive coaches, who didn’t seem to make Daniels aware enough of his situation. It’s on Daniels, who needs a timer hidden in his uniform.

And maybe it’s on a football team that didn’t know the rules governing overtime.

Maybe the nickname change was a blessing. Because this embarrassment will not go down in Redskins lore.
