‘The X-Files’ Is Officially Returning as Hulu Picks Up Ryan Coogler’s ‘Reimagining’ of the Sci-Fi Icon
The truth is there once again, as Disney and Hulu confirmed today that they picked up a new show “The X-Files” for a full season.
Described as a “reimagining” of the classic series, the project comes from Ryan Coogler, the acclaimed writer and director of “Creed,” “Black Panther” and “Sinners,” and will star Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel.
The premise of the series will seem very familiar to fans of the original, as it focuses on “two highly decorated but very different FBI agents who form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-closed division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena.”
“I’ve loved ‘The X-Files’ for a long time, so having the chance to write and direct the pilot meant a lot to me,” Coogler said. “What Chris Carter created is special, and we wanted to honor everything that made the original series touch so many people while finding our own way into this world.”
Coogler wrote, directed and produced the pilot for this new show, which impressed Hulu executives enough to greenlight the show. It certainly has the pedigree when it comes to “scary,” as “Sinners” was a masterpiece of modern horror, winning the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay at the 2025 Academy Awards.
Alongside the main cast, the cast will include Amy Madigan, Ben Foster, Devery Jacobs, Lochlyn Munro, Tantoo Cardinal, Joel D. Montgrand, Sofia Grace Clifton and Hollywood legend Steve Buscemi (an inspired casting choice for any series, but especially here. He looks like a man who has seen the truth).
Coogler and Hulu are coy about how this new series will fit into the continuity of the original series. It’s described as a reimagining, but they haven’t talked about a reboot, which could leave the door open for Mulder and Scully to return in some capacity.
The original creator of “The X-Files”, Chris Carteris also on board as executive producer, which is great news for fans who are hoping this new incarnation will keep the spirit of the original alive.
There’s no confirmed release date yet, but Ryan Coogler’s The X-Files project will launch exclusively on Hulu (United States) & Disney+ (UK).
