For the past year, we’ve been eagerly awaiting another refresh of the iPad mini, and it seems like it’s just around the corner. A new leak from Aaron Perris last week revealed that the product is expected to feature an A20 Pro chip and thinner bezels, and we already know that it will feature OLED and a water-resistant design.
While these upgrades are great, I have one major thing I want from the next iPad mini, and that has to do with software.
After seeing the iPhone Duo, I’m amazed at how well Apple has mastered multitasking on the device. Multitasking on iPad has always seemed like a mess to me, and the iPhone Duo is simply elegant.
On such a small screen, having proper windowing on the iPad mini never seemed appropriate. Users probably don’t overlap many windows on the iPad mini. That’s why I wish Apple would steal a cool feature from the iPhone Duo: picture-in-picture split-screen.
I mean really, it’s a great experience. Currently, there’s no way on the iPad mini to make an image in the picture window take up the entire width of the device in portrait mode, and even if there was, you’d either have to have it block out part of your app or manually align the sizing using windowing.
Bringing a split view of video and apps to the iPad mini’s screen seems like a no-brainer to me, especially since the iPhone Duo and iPad mini share similar aspect ratios. At least personally, I would use an iPad mini in portrait a lot more if this feature existed.
