TJ Maxx shoppers in Maryland and Massachusetts may have lost their favorite nearby locations, but – overall – the discount retailer has a larger footprint now than in early 2026.
A total of 11 net new TJ Maxx stores opened during The TJX Company’s first half of fiscal 2027, which ended Aug. 1, 2026, according to the company, which also operates Marshalls, HomeGoods, Homesense and Sierra stores. And additional TJ Maxx locations will open in the second half of the fiscal year, the company says.
Five new TJ Maxx stores opened in August, one each in Arkansas, Montana, Ohio, Oregon and Virginia. In addition to the September opening in Iowa, nine more stores will open before or on November 1st.
Recent media reports have focused on three TJ Maxx closures in 2026, two in Maryland and one in Boston. The company told USA TODAY it has no additional store closures coming, beyond these three closures.
The TJX Company had 1,359 TJ Maxx stores as of Aug. 1, according to its second-quarter earnings report. That’s five more than the company had at the start of the quarter.
TJX, which currently has more than 5,300 stores in 10 countries, plans to continue opening new stores, including new TJ Maxx locations, in the coming months, the company said in a statement to USA TODAY.
“During the first half of fiscal 2027, we opened 71 net new stores across our global retail brands, including 11 net new TJ Maxx stores, and expect to continue adding stores during the second half,” the company said in a statement. “Additionally, in August, we announced that we plan to accelerate our store opening rate to 4% starting next year and believe we can grow our global store base to a total of 7,500 stores across our existing retail brands in our current countries over the long term.
