Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo’s latest attempt to compete in the Korn Ferry Tour reportedly ended in disqualification.
Golf.com’s Michael Bamberger reported that Romo competed in a Korn Ferry pre-qualifying tournament at the Forest Ridge club in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, earlier this month and was disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard after his third round.
He had the opportunity to finish in the top 37 of the 54-hole tournament and advance to the first stage of the Korn Ferry Q-School after a strong first and second round. Although he was officially disqualified, he also did not perform well enough in the third round to advance if the scorecard had been correct.
Romo played his third round with college golfer Ethan Smith and professional Brandon Rice.
The former Cowboys star signed for a score of 74, although Rice also held his score and thought Romo scored a five on the 16th hole despite signing for a score of four, according to Bamberger.
Bamberger noted that PGA Tour rules chief Rob Keller said a South Central PGA professional also said Romo shot a five on the 16th hole and the 17th hole even though he posted a score of four on each.
Signing for a lower score than was actually drawn results in disqualification if not corrected within 15 minutes, even if it was an honest mistake. Keller told Bamberger that Romo took responsibility and was “very complimentary” of the event.
Perhaps most notably, neither score would have been good enough to advance.
Last week, CBS Sports and Romo parted ways, ending his broadcasting career with the company. Steve Megargee of the Associated Press reported Sept. 1 that Romo pleaded no contest to a charge of operating while intoxicated after his arrest in July.
