Toyota is recalling more than 105,000 vehicles due to a fuel leak that could cause a fire.
The company recalled 105,794 vehicles manufactured between 2024 and 2027 on October 14 via the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website.
According to Toyota, the vehicles have a faulty fuel tube fitting near the fuel tank that can become disconnected and cause a fuel leak. A fuel leak combined with an ignition source can increase the risk of fire, the automaker said.
Toyota said that as of early October, there have been 23 Toyota field technical reports and 64 warranty claims in the United States that may be related to this issue.
When USA TODAY contacted Toyota on Oct. 21 to inquire whether there had been any injuries related to the recall, the company declined to comment.
Here’s what we know about the recall.
What vehicles are included in the Toyota recall?
According to NHTSA, the recall includes the following pattern:
- Toyota Land Cruiser Hybrid 2024-2027
Here is the breakdown:
- Toyota Land Cruiser 2024 – 25,041 vehicles
- Toyota Land Cruiser 2025 – 41,955 vehicles
- Toyota Land Cruiser 2026 – 21,274 vehicles
- Toyota Land Cruiser 2027 – 17,524 vehicles
What’s the problem?
The recalled vehicles were built with a resin fuel tube that connects to a metal fuel tube. Together, these tubes and the connector that connects them carry fuel from the fuel tank to the engine, Toyota said.
Connectors connecting the fuel tubes can lift and become disconnected, causing a fuel leak, Toyota said. In the event of a fuel leak, the hybrid system engine shuts down. A fuel leak, combined with an ignition source, could increase the risk of fire, Toyota said.
Toyota began receiving field reports of fuel leaks in mid-July 2024. As part of its investigation, the company inspected at least 600 vehicles and also conducted vibration and pressure tests.
What should car owners do?
The company said it would ask dealers to inspect the connection and install an additional clamp to prevent it from becoming disconnected again. If necessary, dealers will replace the resin fuel tube and install the clamp.
Toyota will notify drivers of the fix between November 29 and December 13.
The NHTSA recall number is 26V673. The Toyota recall number is 26TB23/26TA23.
