Trump administration rejects Mamdani’s request to freeze ICE enforcement after shooting
NEW YORK — A broad daylight shooting by federal immigration agents in New York is testing the Mamdani-Trump relationship.
Hours after masked Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents peppered a car containing a five-year-old boy with bullets, the mayor Zohran Mamdani said he spoke with the president Donald Trump to demand an end to ICE operations in the city and the release of a 28-year-old man who was shot in the neck.
Neither happened. That left the mayor facing uncomfortable questions Friday about the usefulness of his Trump charm offensive and a rift with left-wing allies who clashed with New York police during a chaotic protest in the residential neighborhood where the shooting took place.
‘We’re not putting a pause on law enforcement,’ Homeland Security secretary says Markwayne Mullin » declared Friday during a press conference, where he denounced the mayor at length. “It’s shameful to have a mayor who puts criminals ahead of law-abiding citizens.”
