The US State Department has ruled out any plans to sell arms to China, after the US ambassador said over the weekend that President Donald Trump had requested Xi Jinping if Beijing wanted to buy American weapons.
There was no such “offer or plan,” the State Department said Monday in an email response to the South China Morning Post.
Speaking to Fox News after the Chinese leader’s state visit to Washington, U.S. Ambassador to Beijing David Perdue said, “(Trump) actually asked President Xi if he would like to purchase some at some point.”
Perdue did not say when Trump raised the issue, what motivated him or how Xi responded.
