
Trump brings big plans to red states. Republicans fear it is too late.
It’s finally infrastructure week. President Donald Trump announces major transportation, energy and manufacturing projects and promises thousands of jobs in states where vulnerable Republicans live.
Republican strategists who know these states best fear it may be too little, too late.
The projects — which include a $50 billion natural gas pipeline in Alaska, a $15 billion steel mill in Iowa and a $3.2 billion bridge project the president is expected to tout in Alabama — are drawing bipartisan applause and could prove an economic boon for states, if they come to fruition.
But none of those projects will come online until 2030 at the earliest. And while Republican strategists welcome the move in a cycle where Republicans are desperate for good news to campaign on, they are skeptical that these efforts will make a difference. above $4.40 per gallon and mortgage rates close to 7.5%.
