Donald Trump is getting angry on social media about the Florida congresswoman who broke ranks with him over his tough immigration tactics.
The president, 80, shared at least 14 posts on Truth Social targeting Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar on Saturday evening, apparently in response to a video the Trump-backed candidate posted earlier this month criticizing him.
“Give her the primary in two years and see how she likes to continue criticizing Trump then,” one user wrote in a post shared by the president. In another, a user added: “So we need a NEW Republican to replace Salazar.” »
“She is nothing but a traitor,” another article read. “I’m glad Latino support hasn’t wavered.”
A spokesperson for Salazar did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
On September 17, Salazar, who faces a tight re-election race in a red county with a large Hispanic population, claimed in his video that Trump’s immigration policies had gone “too far.”
“The same Hispanics who helped get you to the White House in 2024 feel betrayed today,” she said. Salazar, the representative from moderately red Miami-Dade County, noted that half of immigrants detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in July had no criminal convictions or pending charges, a figure attributed to the Deportation Data Project.
Salazar then spoke directly to Trump and warned him to “be careful what your advisors tell you on immigration policy.”
A few days later she said Face the nation that “some of (Trump’s) advisors are undermining his legacy,” but declined to identify them.
“There are no attacks here, I’m just warning him,” she said. “And informing him, as a member of Congress from the South Florida area, that some of his advisors are simply not presenting the whole picture.”
A White House official told The Daily Beast: “It’s unfortunate that she has her point of view, but it’s not the president’s point of view. »
“The president campaigned on a strong border, which is a large part of why he won a landslide victory in 2024,” they said.
Trump did not withdraw his support for Salazar, although he told a reporter that he disagreed with the former Telemundo host.
He told the reporter that Salazar “got a little soft on the border” and would not have won without his support, CNN reported.
However, he now appears to be considering replacing Salazar for the next term.
In 2024, Trump won Miami-Dade County, which includes Salazar’s district, by nearly 15 points. Today, surveys show it is ten points underwater.
The county has been heavily impacted by his administration’s hostile crackdown on immigration. In addition to having a robust immigrant community, Miami-Dade County was home to the hellscape nicknamed “Alligator Alcatraz,” Florida’s now-shuttered immigrant detention center accused of committing human rights abuses.
The Florida congresswoman is one of several Republicans sowing distance between themselves and the unpopular president as the November election approaches.
Trump on Sunday slammed reports that Florida GOP gubernatorial candidate Byron Donalds was quietly removing mentions of the president from his campaign materials.
“Another false story is that a very close friend of mine, a man I supported early on, Byron Donalds, is removing me from his website and campaign materials,” Trump wrote, adding, “I won Florida by millions of votes, receiving the most votes in history – three times! My numbers are better now than they were in the election.”
