Trump meets with AI leaders, proposes ‘self-regulation’ as way to confront dangers of technology
President Trump gathered top artificial intelligence leaders in Washington on Tuesday and doubled down on his opposition to government intervention, suggesting “self-regulation” is the answer to growing concerns about technology beyond human control.
“There is a belief that there should be considerable self-regulation,” the president said after his meeting with the assembled CEOs. “There was a lot of commonality in that room.”
Trump and the CEOs said they had signed a “super intelligence deal” that was not immediately released, but which the president said would keep companies in line through “self- and group-based surveillance.”
Some executives present said the deal would include commitments to a combination of technology controls to detect problems with new models, internal risk review efforts, external auditors and other measures.
Meta (META) CEO Mark Zuckerberg called the deal a “start,” while others suggested some details still need to be worked out.
“The mechanism, how we address these risks, is still under discussion,” said Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic (ANTH.PVT). Progress has been made for the United States to win in AI and in safety, he said, while emphasizing that the technology still poses “real dangers.”
Amodei published an essay earlier this month titled “We must survey the border” which sparked a fierce debate over the need for a cooperative slowdown in AI capabilities.
The deal also officially changed the name of the technology used in government record keeping to Super Intelligence.
“We have officially changed the name to SI,” Trump said.
The “Super Intelligence Meeting and Luncheon,” as the White House described the event, took place in the East Room, with Trump even publishes the seating chart. The place was the same place where, just a few days ago, many AI leaders gathered. for a state dinner for Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Elon Musk of Tesla (TSLA), Jensen Huang of Nvidia (NVDA), and Lisa Su of Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) were everyone at the head table with Xi last Thursday and again received prominent spots near Trump.
After the meeting, Trump also said he was “very close” to a decision on an AI czar and would announce it in the next three to four days.
Other notable guests included Google CEO Sundar Pichai (GOOGL, GOOG), Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella (MSFT), OpenAI Chairman Greg Brockman (OPAI.PVT), Palantir CEO Alex Karp (PLTR), Amazon Founder Jeff Bezos (AMZN), and others.
The gathering took place as the United States continues to digest a series of alarming new revelations about AI in recent days, like an Axios report that OpenAI, Anthropic, and security researchers were sifting through thousands of incidents of problematic actions by AI agents.
