Trump orders bypass of Russian sanctions in bill named for late Lindsey Graham
President Donald Trump signed an executive order Friday waiving key sanctions under the Lindsey O. Graham Russia Sanctioning Act, significantly blunting the tool Congress gave him to pressure Moscow at the negotiating table.
“I hereby waive the application of the sanctions, restrictions and obligations provided for in the Graham Act,” Asset written in order. “I have submitted to Congress a certification that granting such a waiver at this time is in the national interest of the United States.”
Asset signed the bill last month, the culmination of a more than year-long effort led by the legislation’s namesake, the late Sen. Lindsey Grahaman ally of the president and Russian Falcon died in July.
Critics saw this as further evidence of Asset siding with Russia, which launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 that has caused an estimated 1.4 million casualties.
