Trump plans executive order to cut high diesel costs
President Donald Trump plans to announce executive actions Monday aimed at reducing high fuel costs weighing on Republicans ahead of the midterm elections, according to three people familiar with the plan.
Trump plans to tout the measures during a campaign stop in Nebraska, where high diesel costs and the president’s move to increase imports of foreign beef before November have riled farmers and ranchers at the height of the harvest season in states gripped by deep red and conflict. This announcement would come after weeks of chaotic messages on high diesel prices, punctuated Friday by Asset saying that he would not impose a diesel export ban after repeatedly saying he was considering this option.
The measures to be announced Monday include a review by the Treasury Department of certain diesel taxes. The executive order would also direct states to do more to increase the availability of tax-exempt red-tinted diesel, used in agriculture, construction and other industries, and urge states to waive certain fuel taxes, according to population. The executive actions also include so-called non-enforcement of tinted diesel limitations. Some Republican governors have already taken similar steps regarding dyed diesel.
Asset the officials were prepare the action around tinted diesel for more than a week. Monday’s decision comes as soaring fuel prices — driven by the ongoing war with Iran as well as Ukrainian attacks on Russian refineries — have angered farmers and contributed to persistent inflation that threatens Republicans’ hold on Congress in November’s midterm elections. But some Republicans have opposed efforts to eliminate excise taxes on diesel because states use that revenue to fund infrastructure projects such as road repairs.
