Trump plans to fire top political advisers ahead of midterm elections
President Donald Trump distanced himself from two of his top political advisers on Wednesday – less than 30 days before the midterm elections – writing that if their outside work presents a conflict, “I will fire them immediately!” »
Trump’s warning came after The New York Times published a report detailing how James Blair, one of the president’s former deputy chiefs of staff who now runs his foreign political operations, and Chris LaCivita, co-director of Trump’s 2024 campaign, traveled to the Balkans last week for paid work on behalf of a pro-Russian government.
Trump, who is actively campaigning for Republicans ahead of November’s midterm elections, has suggested he has nothing to do with his advisers’ lucrative work outside the United States.
“Chris LaCivita and James Blair are outside consultants. They don’t work for me other than as outside consultants. They most likely have a lot of clients, but you’d have to ask them for that,” Trump said Wednesday on Truth Social.
According to the Times, Blair and LaCivita visited Republika Srpska, a territory in Bosnia-Herzegovina, ahead of Sunday’s elections. The trip comes as polls show Republicans face serious electoral challenges in the United States.
“They are allowed to work for others, just like all consultants in Washington, D.C. I have no idea who else they work for but, on second thought, I will ask them and, if there is a conflict, I will fire them immediately!” Trump wrote.
Blair and LaCivita “received hundreds of thousands of dollars each through a Washington-based law firm that was retained by the government of Republika Srpska to provide advice on voting issues,” the Times reported.
They said the job was for the government and not the nationalist party that controls it, although they are essentially one and the same.
Blair currently runs Trump’s super PAC, MAGA Inc., and has been tasked with leading the president’s midterm election strategy. LaCivita is a senior advisor at MAGA Inc.
The group has spent tens of millions of dollars trying to support Republican candidates ahead of the midterm elections, including some in red territory who now appear vulnerable.
