Trump promises $100 checks for 20 million seniors for Medicare
What he says: “I am pleased to announce that my administration will immediately begin sending ‘checks’ of nearly $100 to more than 20 MILLION wonderful seniors to help pay their Medicare Part B premiums, which we have already reduced by significant amounts,” Trump said in a Truth Social article just before 11 p.m. ET Friday.
- Trump said the money would come from the Medicare Improvement Fund, which he called a “slush fund.”
How it works: The White House, in a separate fact sheet, said eligible seniors would receive a $90 direct deposit in early October, or paper checks if they don’t have direct deposit.
- “Most” Medicare Part B enrollees are eligible, according to the fact sheet.
- The Medicare Improvement Fund, established in 2008, has been a political hot potato for years.
Yes, but: According to Medicare, the standard Part B premium is $202.90 per month, so the $90 credit will offset less than half of a month’s bill.
The big picture: Facing the worst economic polls in a decade and with the midterms approaching, Trump is actively working to put money back in Americans’ pockets.
Zoom: In early September, he promised $5,000 for every adult citizen if Republicans won the midterms, a promise he reiterated Friday night but which most voters do not believe.
- He offered $500 Obamacare rebates to more than a million people who were allegedly overcharged for their benefits.
- He also recently suggested a less specific dividend for those who live near data centers.
- These ideas are in addition to rebates he proposed in 2025 that were ultimately not paid off, including tariff rebates and DOGE dividends.
What to watch: Payments should start flowing in the coming days.
