Trump rips Robert De Niro, considers Hollywood tax credits at Daytona Beach rally
WASHINGTON — President Trump reignited his feud with Robert De Niro on Friday, saying the Democratic-backed actor was a “disgusting” moron who had “something wrong with him” — as he discussed possible tax credits for Hollywood.
Trump decided to attack the 83-year-old celebrity by mentioning his former reality TV show “The Apprentice” during a campaign rally in Daytona Beach, Florida, for Republican gubernatorial candidate Byron Donalds.
Trump said his show was “beating what used to be a great show, the Oscars,” lamenting that the celebrity festival now “sucks because people stand up and use foul language about your favorite president.”
“By the way, is Robert De Niro an idiot? He’s an idiot,” Trump said — apparently still furious over De Niro’s “Fk Trump” speech at the 2018 Tony Awards.
“No, there’s something wrong with him. I used to kinda like him or something, but now I can’t even look at him. He’s like disgusting. Then he gets into comedies. He’s not good at comedies. Maybe someone should tell him, but he’s horrible.”
The “Taxi Driver” star won two Oscars – for “The Godfather Part II” and “Raging Bull.” His best-known comedic roles later in his career include his role as a father in “Meet the Parents” in 2000.
It’s unclear what exactly sparked Trump’s anger at De Niro, although the actor raised money for Democrats ahead of Tuesday’s midterm elections, including with an email solicitation attacking the “Trump/Epstein class,” linking the president to the late sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein.
Trump also claimed that Hollywood executives are “kicking my ass” by seeking new tax credits for films.
“Guys who have been talking shit about me for years are sitting in my office. ‘Sir, it’s a great honor to be with you, sir,'” Trump told his audience.
“See, the great thing about the Internet is that all you do is press a button, and it tells you everything they’ve said over the last 20 years,” he added, before impersonating a visiting Hollywood representative by pleading, “Sir, I just want to say before I start, I was misquoted when I called you an asshole.
“They misquoted me. I didn’t say that, sir!'”
