US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that a “very big” deal was in the works with Russia to end the war in Ukraine.

Trump made the comments after having an unscheduled meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s special envoy, Kirill Dmitriev, at the White House.

What did Trump say?

Speaking later to reporters, the president said the war between Russia and Ukraine was close to being resolved and its end could involve “all of Europe.”

“I can’t tell you what I discussed. But I just tell you, it’s going to be a deal, it’s going to be a great deal,” Trump said in the Oval Office.

“It’s going to be very important. It’s going to involve more than just Ukraine, and I could even say it could involve all of Europe. It’s going to be a big, beautiful deal, and everyone will be delighted.”

Trump said he did not meet with Ukrainian officials who were also at the White House on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Trump’s son-in-law and US envoy Jared Kushner said the US, NATO and European partners held “productive and substantive discussions” on resolving the war in Ukraine on Thursday.

“Our goal is to address the security concerns of all parties through practical, mutually agreed arrangements that reduce the risk of future conflict,” he wrote on X, ahead of talks next week in Abu Dhabi involving kyiv and Moscow.

Even before his return to the White House, Trump made similar promises about an imminent end to the conflict, including saying he would end the war in one day once he became president.

Ukraine and Russia praise Melania Trump for brokering Olechky truce

Delegations from Russia and Ukraine were at the White House Thursday for an event honoring First Lady Melania Trump’s work pushing for a recent ceasefire in the war-ravaged town of Oleshky.

Speaking at her invitation, Russian envoy Dmitriev thanked the first lady for her “distinguished humanitarian role” in securing a six-day truce.

Dmitriev added that Putin personally gave instructions in the operation and expressed his thanks to Melania Trump.

The head of the parliamentary faction of President Volodymyr Zelensky’s party, Davyd Arakhamia, and Ukraine’s human rights ombudsman, Dmytro Lubinets, also spoke at the event.

Arakhamia told the first lady she had done an “incredible job” and encouraged her to continue helping the Ukrainian people.

“We would certainly like to ask you to continue, find new missions and defuse as much as possible,” Arakhamia said.
