Trump threatens to ‘destroy’ Iran, Tehran sends nuclear proposal with 7 conditions
Washington:
Iran has sent a nuclear proposal to the United States as US President Donald Trump threatens to “destroy” the rest of the Islamic Republic. The proposal was sent via Qatar and will only be discussed once Washington fulfills Tehran’s seven demands, Reuters news agency reported, citing a senior Iranian official.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told the agency that Washington was reviewing the proposal, but declined to provide further details.
Iran’s top security official, Mohsen Rezaei, said earlier this week that “on the issue of diplomacy, we announced seven conditions to the Americans. Until they respect our seven conditions, we will not open the Strait of Hormuz or enter into negotiations.”
What are the 7 terms of Iran?
The official list of conditions imposed on Iran has not yet been made public, but according to an article in Khaleej Times, Tehran’s demands likely include a complete end to hostilities, including in Lebanon, the lifting of the US naval blockade on Iranian ports, the lifting of sanctions against Iran, the release of the frozen assets of the Islamic Republic, the reduction of the US military presence in the region, compensation for war-related damages and an end to US attacks on Iranian territory.
Washington has meanwhile said nuclear issues must be part of any initial negotiations.
Trump’s threat of attack
The proposal comes at a time when mediators have stepped up efforts to end the war between Iran and the United States amid fears it could resume after the U.S. midterm elections, with Trump refusing to rule out a resumption of combat operations after the vote and Iran planning broader retaliation if the war resumes.
The United States and Israel attacked Iran on February 28, and Iran responded with strikes against Israel and Gulf states that host U.S. bases. Conflict has also erupted in Lebanon between Iran-backed Hezbollah and Israel, and has spread more recently to Yemen, from where the Iran-aligned Houthis have struck energy facilities, airports and other targets in Saudi Arabia.
