Trump could still trigger ‘major combat operation’ against Iran following troop surge, says Keane
Retirement. Gen. Jack Keane told “Fox & Friends” Friday that President Donald Trump still has the option to return to a “major combat operation” against Iran as the United States sends the USS Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group and the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit to the Middle East.
U.S. officials told Fox News on Thursday that the ships are expected to arrive in the region by the end of November and that the new deployments would add about 10,000 sailors and Marines to the Middle East.
When asked for his reaction to the new deployment on Friday, Keane said: “We always anticipated – the Israelis and the United States – that Iran was probably going to escalate, before the elections in Israel in October, the elections in the United States in November.
“That’s probably part of what happened here,” he told “Fox & Friends.” “But it’s also about — the president has it on the table, and he’s never taken it off the table — about getting back to major combat operations. For our audience, as a reminder, this is about combined operations of the United States and Israel. Probably over a much shorter period of time, probably a much more massive attack than anything we’ve ever seen before.”
Our intelligence is intact. I mean, we followed everything the Iranians do. Think about it, since the ceasefire of April 7. So we know where everything is and what we need to do to deal with it. And obviously we have priorities that certain things are very important. And that would bring total devastation to this regime and its ability to move forward,” added Keane, a retired four-star general.
“There is no doubt that we can put it on the path to collapse. And I assume that the CIA and Mossad are working here full time to undermine the regime, to fracture it, and also to work with groups that want to provide meaningful resistance to the regime. Let’s just assume that that also happened,” he added.
