Trump’s construction of Big Bend border wall blocked by judge
Driving the news: The administration is prohibited, at this time, from building barriers or border infrastructure – or engaging in activities “construction or ground disturbance activities” — in the Big Bend area, U.S. District Judge Kathleen Cardone said in a brief order.
- The administration suspended construction of the border wall in the park in August, with U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Rodney Scott saying he would visit and talk with local stakeholders.
- DHS did not immediately respond to Axios’ request for comment.
Catch up quickly: Local opponents urged the court to block the administration from restarting construction, alleging the administration had overstepped its authority on several fronts and warning of harm to the environment and recreation.
- “Once bulldozers have cleared vegetation, roads have been cut on previously undeveloped land, lights have been installed, and steel barrier infrastructure has been put in place, these qualities cannot be restored by monetary compensation or after-the-fact assistance,” they argued in a motion in August.
