A 19-year-old UC student was shot and killed Saturday night, and another seriously injured, following a party at a home in the 700 block of Marine Street in Boulder.

The shootings occurred after police broke up the party attended by hundreds of people, Boulder Police Chief Stephen Redfearn said Sunday morning at a news conference in which he asked for the public’s help in identifying two people of interest in the case.

Police are still searching for the perpetrator(s) of the shooting. In a post Sunday morning on X, police said they “have no information indicating the suspect(s) are still in Boulder and we are actively investigating numerous leads.”

Redfearn said that around 9:54 p.m. Saturday, police received a noise complaint about a house party that included a live band. Officers responded to the scene at 10:02 p.m. and found the noise had reached the threshold for a nuisance party citation, he said. Within 10 minutes, officers began breaking up the party.

The hundreds of people gathered dispersed, Redfearn said, but a smaller group of people — including those who lived in the house — remained.

At 11:28 p.m., police began receiving calls about a shooting at the home, Redfearn said. Around 11:30 p.m., police arrived on scene and found two people suffering from gunshot wounds.

The victims, both 19, were transported to Boulder Community Health by ambulance, and one of them later died, the chief said.

It’s Boulder’s first homicide of the year, he said.

Redfearn said about 20 witnesses were brought to the police department for questioning.

At Sunday morning’s press conference, he showed video of the two persons of interest police were looking for. “It’s imperative that we talk to them,” he said.

Redfearn said police believe these two people “were present when a group attempted to force their way into the party, or at least the house. Shortly afterward, a shooting occurred inside the house.”

The two men were identified in an email from the City of Boulder as a man with short, dark hair and facial hair, wearing a red hooded sweatshirt under a black jacket; and a man with short, dark hair, wearing a black shirt with Art the Clown on it and a silver chain necklace. Anyone who recognizes them is asked to call 303-441-3333.

Detectives also want to speak with other people seen in video footage of the party who may have information about what happened, the email states, and they are requesting photos and videos from the party.

One neighbor, a UC student who did not want his name published, told the Daily Camera Sunday morning that he heard three gunshots after the party broke up. Another neighbor said he was at the party but left because of the number of people there. The party was broken up after he left.

Neither reported knowing the home’s residents well, but reported having friendly interactions with them, such as borrowing tools.

“We know that many of the witnesses were UC students,” UC Police Chief Ashley Griffin said during Sunday’s news conference.

“This is an incredibly traumatic event for our university community,” she added, noting that the university’s dean of students’ office was reaching out to students affected by the shooting.

Redfearn said Saturday night’s party was registered with Boulder police. UC Dean of Students Devin Cramer said the registration process is a collaboration between the university and Boulder police. He said he was not aware of any affiliation between party organizers and the university.

District Attorney Michael Dougherty said his office assisted with interviews overnight. “Progress is already being made. »

Redfearn said police would have an increased presence in the area.

“This is abnormal for Boulder…,” he said. “Fortunately, we are not used to gun violence.”

Crushed beer cans, glass bottles – some broken – and other trash were scattered around the house late Sunday morning. Fake cobwebs with fake spiders and a CU Buffaloes flag decorated the porch. The string lights draped across the front porch were still on from the night before. Cars passing the house, located on the northwest corner of Seventh and Marine streets, slowed down as drivers and passengers tried to sneak a peek at the house.

“I am so devastated by the tragic shooting on Hill last night, where a UC student, so loved by his friends and family, was killed,” wrote Boulder Mayor Pro Tem Tara Winer, who lives in the neighboring Lower Chautauqua neighborhood, in a post Sunday on Nextdoor. “I’m beside myself. Please let’s come together as a community and mourn this tragic loss. If you know a UC student, reach out to them and see if they are okay.”

Resources for the CU Community

The CU Boulder Chancellor’s Office shared a message Sunday urging students to reach out to mental health resources if necessary. The university encouraged students to contact the Office of Victim Assistance, a free and confidential resource for students, staff and faculty who have witnessed a traumatic event. The OVA can be called at 303-492-8855.

Students can access free and confidential mental health counseling through Counseling and Psychiatry Services at 303-492-2277.

The Faculty and Staff Assistance Program, which provides in-person and telehealth counseling and consultation services to faculty and staff, is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and can be reached at 303-492-3020.

Anyone seeking assistance for a student or anyone needing other support should email deanofstudents@colorado.edu.

This is a developing story.
