UCF coach Scott Frost celebrates and discusses victory against No. 2 BYU – Deseret News
For the first time in school history, UCF beat a team ranked in the top five.
The Knights stunned No. 2 BYU in double overtime Saturday in Orlando, Fla., marking the program’s biggest upset to date and the highlight of its sophomore Scott Frost era.
“I think I’ve been a part of some of the coolest games in UCF history, and this one lives up to it,” Frost told reporters after the game.
“…Man, it’s tough to beat number two. We’ve got to find a way where it’s not just one game, it’s got to be the way we play the rest of the year…Anyone in this league can beat you any week, and you can win any week if you play well.”
Fresh off an upset against No. 2 Notre Dame last week, BYU couldn’t maintain its momentum, looking outmatched and outmatched for the majority of Saturday’s action.
UCF, however, produced its most impressive performance of the season to secure the historic upset and remain undefeated at home.
“I’m happy for our kids…I think they’re the best team we’ve ever played. It’s tough in football to have a game like BYU last week and then go on the road and try to have the same energy,” Frost said. “And we were in a good position from that standpoint. They were in a tough situation from that standpoint.
“I have so much respect for Kalani (Sitake) and this football team. They’re going to be in the playoffs, they deserve it. But I’m happy for UCF, a win like this has been a long time coming for us. I’m happy for the players there who have been close multiple times and didn’t make it. And my God, they found a different gear tonight when we were in that situation.”
The Knights started quarterback Keyone Jenkins against BYU, and he was sensational with 293 passing yards, two touchdowns and another rushing score.
“Our guy doesn’t play like a backup, our guy played like a legitimate starter tonight, and we needed every single play he made. But man, I’m glad we went for him,” Frost said.
BYU struggled on both sides of the ball, giving up 463 total yards on offense and 170 yards on the ground. The Cougars also lost the possession battle, the turnover competition and were unable to move the ball consistently or effectively.
“We hit tonight. It was pretty different for me when those guys went running; we were stabbing their legs, we were hitting them. We stopped the run really well,” Frost said of his defense’s release against BYU.
“That was my worry before the game: If they could intimidate us, maybe we wouldn’t be able to give ourselves a chance to win. And I think we matched their physicality. I think we outscored them by 100 yards. You know, we were unlucky tonight. We won the football game, and against a very good, well-coached football team.”
With the win, UCF now improves to 4-3 on the season, facing Baylor in a short week next Friday.
“We have to do our best to get the team physically and mentally ready to play,” Frost said. “We’re not going to work them hard this week, just make sure they know what they’re doing.
“It’s good that we’re at home. I think on a short week, it’s a lot better to be at home than to have to get on a plane the day before, so we’re going to try to do our best in a short week to get the guys ready to perform like they did tonight.”
