United Airlines is set to open its largest airport lounge this week, which it says is the largest in the Americas, as airlines continue to pour money into facilities aimed at high-spending customers.

The 54,000-square-foot lounge opens Thursday at Terminal B at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, part of an airport overhaul that includes 22 gates for mainline jets.

The airport, with more than 500 departures daily, is United’s primary connecting hub for flights to and from Latin America.

The new club seats 800 people and features an outdoor deck for plane viewing as well as two full-service bars and buffets.

The new lounge, part of United’s $2.6 billion investment in the airport’s Terminal B, shows how airlines are investing more money in larger spaces to meet demand for premium travel to attract the growing ranks of elite frequent flyers, co-branded credit card holders and customers simply willing to spend more to fly.

American airlines Earlier this month, it announced plans to open its largest lounge at its Charlotte Douglas International Airport hub in North Carolina. Delta Airlines has expanded both its popular Delta Sky Clubs and its premier Delta One lounges.

Southwest Airlines builds its first ever network of airport lounges, linked to its credit card partner, Hunting. Last week, the carrier revealed mock-ups of the lounges, which it calls Icon. And JetBlue Airways opened salons in New York and Boston last year.
